Flag Day, June 14th, commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on that day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.
Previous to any national acceptance of Flag Day as an observed holiday, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, by order of Resolution, designated June 14th as Flag Day in 1907. In 1911, the Grand Lodge of the Order adopted mandatory observance of the occasion by every Lodge, and that requirement continues.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an act of Congress.
Won’t you please join the Louisiana, Missouri Lodge 791 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in observing Flag Day this year? The event is being held in the Elks Lodge Hall located at 120 N. 5th Street and begins at 10 a.m. on June 14th. Light refreshments will be available after the ceremony.
