BOWLING GREEN, Mo. — A new name was announced for U.S. Business Highway 61 during the final day of the Bowling Green Bicentennial celebration July 1. Starting this fall, the thoroughfare will be called “John Walter Basye Memorial Highway” in honor of the Pike County community’s founder. Signs will be placed at the north and south entrances to town. The $2,500 cost was paid entirely from private donations and did not include taxpayer dollars. Pictured making the presentation, from left, are centennial organizer Don Hamilton, Basye family members Mike Basye, Josh Basye and Marjetta Atkinson, and State Rep. Chad Perkins, R-40, of Bowling Green. The name is pronounced BAY-zee.
