LOUISIANA, Mo. — An appointment to fill the mayor’s seat in Louisiana was postponed for two weeks by the city council at a special meeting on Saturday morning (Oct. 24, 2020).

The meeting had been scheduled following the resignation of Marvin Brown on Tuesday, Oct. 20 for health reasons. Mayor Pro Tem Kathy Smith called the meeting to order on Saturday and read Brown’s letter of resignation into the minutes. She opened the floor to nominations. Council member Nancy Evans nominated Smith to serve as the interim mayor until the next election. The city attorney advised the council that an appointment needed to be made to fill the position. He explained the council could not use a member of its body as a temporary solution. An interim selection could have been made if Brown was incapacitated, but maintained the title. Since Brown resigned, an appointment from outside the council needs to be made.

Following a lengthy discussion, the council decided to postpone the appointment. They decided to meet again in two weeks, which will give council members time to canvas the community for individuals who are qualified and interested in serving.

Brown was elected as mayor in April of 2018. His term was due to expire in 2022.
