BOWLING GREEN, Mo. — A new effort promises to help disadvantaged people pay off overdue utility bills in Missouri.

The North East Community Action Corporation has teamed up with Ameren Missouri for the three-million-dollar Clean Slate program.

The one-time assistance for income-qualifying residents will be offered first-come, first-served. Applicants must be the Ameren customer on record, present a Social Security card and have a copy of their latest bills. A disconnect notice is not required.

Those who have received energy assistance from NECAC in the past do not have to provide income documentation unless there has been a change in status.

Clients must pay at least 25 percent of the bill before the rest is paid by Clean Slate and no funds will be allocated until a client receipt of payment has been received.
