Paul Smith is now considered the suspect in this case. No longer a person of interest Authorities do not believe anyone else was involved in the abduction of Alisa Maier. Smith took Alisa to a Wal-Mart store in Troy where he purchased the girl new clothes.
Relatives of Maier, the four year old girl who was kidnapped outside her
Louisiana home Monday evening and then found alive at an old town Fenton
car wash Tuesday night, said when Alisa saw a picture of the person of interest she
told them "he cut my hair."
Also, Maier's six-year-old brother, Blake, witnessed the abduction and family
members said when he saw a picture of the person of interest on
television, "he got really scared and shook."
St. Louis County police said a man detectives considered a "person
of interest" in the abduction was being approached by police in Hawk
Point, when he shot himself. Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Al
Nothum confirmed Paul S. Smith died at 10:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's
Hospital in St. Charles.
Smith, 38 was a registered sex offender.
In 1995 he pleaded guilty to sodomizing a 10 year old boy. Court
records list his most recent address as 309 Hwy. D in Hawk Point where
the confrontation took place.
