This Saturday, more than 100 volunteers will be working on state highway road sides all day to pick up trash in an effort to keep Lincoln County clean. The event is being organized by Bill Benhardt with the efforts of the Lincoln County Coalition and Key Club International. "We want to ensure drivers are aware of these volunteers and slow down and pay attention as they're travelling on several state highways throughout Lincoln County," said MoDOT South Area Engineer Erik Maninga. MoDOT is providing the group with vests and garbage bags, and Maninga will be sharing safety information during a presentation to the group.
The Adopt A Highway program is an opportunity for businesses, families and civic organizations to help keep highway roadsides clean. "We have more than 300 adopters in northeast Missouri, and they contribute a significant amount of help, because our crews would normally have to pick up the litter," Maninga said. The pick up this weekend is not affiliated with the Adopt A Highway program, yet Maninga and MoDOT truly appreciate their passion for keeping the roadsides litter free.
