Don’t let a little rain keep you from voting! And while you are exercising your right (and your responsibility) why not take the time to thank those who made it possible for all of us to have that freedom?
Veterans Day is Sunday and the Pike County Chamber of Commerce wants to remind you to pick up your free postcards, stamp them, and get them in the mail in time for Veterans Day on November 11th.
The postcards are available at Pike County post offices, some banks, Senior Centers, the Circuit Clerk’s Office at the Courthouse, at the offices of the Pike Press, the Pike County Express, The Paper in Barry, WBBA radio station, and at the Chamber office/ Pike County Visitors Center at 224 W. Washington in Pittsfield (available 24 hours in the hallway separating our office from the Community Center). The postcards are free- all you have to do is address them, write your personal message, stamp them and mail them.
If you would like to send cards and do not have addresses to whom to send them, I now have names of members of the Pittsfield, Barry, and Griggsville-Perry American Legions. For privacy reasons I will not give these rosters out- but I will provide interested parties individual names and addresses.
The third annual “Let’s Say Thanks” program, a county-wide recognition program to thank veterans and their families is now underway. Thanks again to a generous donor who wishes to remain anonymous, the Pike County Chamber of Commerce is providing postcards free of charge (minus the stamp) to Pike County residents through distribution points around the county. The “Let’s Say Thanks” program grew out of a concern that Veteran’s Day become a day of gratitude for those who have served and who are serving this homeland, as well as their families.
The new postcard features a picture of a young child holding an American Flag with the words “Thank you for making America safe for me”. Images of the insignia of the various branches of the military are across the bottom. The thank you message on the back reads “The children of Pike County Illinois want to thank you for protecting and preserving the peace and freedoms of our country”.
I still have a postcards which I have set aside for schools and other organizations. If you’d like some, please let me know by tomorrow- as I will be distributing the remaining after that. If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email me.
