Rising
water levels are expected to continue on the swollen Mississippi River.
The gauges have jumped up four feet at Louisiana and three feet at
Clarksville since Sunday, and forecasters say the water could reach
major levels again by the weekend.
As it stands, predictions estimate the water to approach the
fifth-highest mark ever in Louisiana and the sixth-highest in
Clarksville.
The problem isn’t just locally heavy precipitation. It’s also heavy
rains to the north and west. Flood warnings have been expanded from the
Mississippi and Illinois rivers to include several
counties in Northeast Missouri between Interstate 70 and Kirksville
The forecast doesn’t look promising, with a 50 percent or greater chance of rain through Saturday.
Clarksville still has its fortified rock, sand and plastic levee in
place along Front Street. There are no plans – repeat, no plans — to
close the Champ Clark Bridge at Louisiana. A full
list of road closings is available at www.modot.org.
