A new report says Missouri and Illinois are among 16 states considered to be at high risk for a major earthquake.
The report comes from the U.S. Geological Survey and shows greater hazard levels for the Midwest.
More traditional earthquake zones such as California and Hawaii are also mentioned.
The New Madrid fault in the Missouri Bootheel provides the biggest chance of a big quake locally. There hasn’t been a major tremor along the fault since the early 1800s.
However, the government rates the risk in Pike County Missouri and Pike County Illinois as relatively low compared with the southern parts of both states.
