Pike County Commissioners have agreed to set up a seven-member 9-1-1 governing board.

There will be one representative from law enforcement, one from the medical field and one from fire and rescue. The other four will be at-large members, with two coming from the eastern side of the county and two from the western side.

A timetable for organizing the panel has not been set. Commissioners plan to approach prospective members.

The commission currently is in charge of 9-1-1. Emergency vehicles are dispatched from Bowling Green and Louisiana. Commissioners hope a 9-1-1 board would be a first step toward building one dispatch facility.

Another issue the new 9-1-1 board would have to face is a potential drop in revenue.

Right now, the service is supported through a tax on land-line telephones. So far, the state has thwarted efforts to extend the tax to cell phones.

As a result, revenues are expected to decrease as more people drop their land-line phones.
