Eleven people were hurt when a prison van ran off a Pike County road.
The Missouri Highway Patrol reports the accident happened at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday on a rural part of Highway 161 northeast of Middletown near the border of Pike and Montgomery counties.
A trooper said the driver fell asleep at the wheel. He was not hurt, but a guard and 10 prisoners had minor to moderate injuries. They were treated at Pike County Memorial Hospital in Louisiana. The inmates were held at the Pike County Jail in Bowling Green until transportation was arranged.
Pike County Sheriff Stephen Korte told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the van belonged to an out-of-state prisoner transport company and was scheduled to make a drop-off in Montgomery County. The sheriff’s department assisted the Highway Patrol investigation.
