Flooding continues to cause headaches in Missouri and Illinois, even as some swollen rivers begin to crest.
The Mississippi is expected to top out at six to eight feet above flood stage Wednesday, Dec. 30th, in Louisiana and Clarksville.
However, water levels are expected to rise another five feet on the Illinois River at Valley City and more than a foot at Hardin before cresting on the weekend. Valley City could come within 18 inches of a record set in 1943.
High water continued to force a detour along Highway 79 on the south side of Louisiana and kept that road closed south of Clarksville. Highway 161 also was shuttered north of Montgomery City. Five road closings were reported in Lincoln County.
Missouri Governor Jay Nixon on Tuesday activated the National Guard to provide security and emergency response in flood-stricken communities. Thirteen deaths have been attributed to the disaster.
