Louisiana is wasting no time as it plans for improvements using revenue from two sales tax increases approved by voters April 5th.
The first step is an ordinance requiring the money be used in upgrading streets, sewers and water lines. The next is completion later this year of three studies that will serve as a construction guide. The immediate focus is Georgia Street, but repairs are planned throughout Louisiana.
City Administrator Kelly Henderson said projects will be done in phases and by priority, but cautioned that the effort is a long-term undertaking. He said nothing will proceed until each project is vetted.
Voters approved sales tax increases totaling three-quarters-of-a-cent that will generate an estimated 290 thousand dollars a year. In addition, the city will borrow money and seek grants to help finance construction.
Revenue from the tax increase will be used to pay off the loans over time. The work is part of a comprehensive blueprint for improving Louisiana’s infrastructure.
