CLARKSVILLE, Mo. — A rule twist may provide even more excitement for Raintree Arts Council’s 50th annual Art Exhibit and Judged Competition.
The event is being held in conjunction with Clarksville Applefest Oct. 12 and 13 at The Apple Shed along Highway 79.
In the past, exhibits were required to have been completed in the previous 24 months. This year, entries can be up to a half-century old.
“Art is the soul of a community, breathing life, color and vibrancy into its very essence,” said Raintree Board President Mindy Webert. “That is why Raintree Arts Council members feel very strongly that by championing the arts, we are championing our communities. I am excited to see the wonderful talent on display and am so thankful that we have the opportunity to bring this to our community. Please plan to join us!”
“Art is important for so many reasons – as a way to communicate and as a release,” added Raintree board member Cindy Logan, an artist and instructor who oversees the show. “People will see new and old work.”
In addition, Raintree will recognize the four artists who founded the organization – Bill Blakey, Pat Kerns, Jerry Epperson and the late Jamie McIlroy.
The competition is open to all artists, but works must be original. There are two categories.
The adult division is for artists 18 and older, with professional and amateur divisions. Professional is described as people who make at least 50 percent of their income from art, have a degree in art or have exhibited in a professional art show. There is also a separate adult photography division for traditional and digital submissions.
The student division is for young people in grades K to 12. Entries are limited to three per student. Logan said it’s “important for area kids to display their work with pride.”
Accepted media are oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, drawing, printmaking, photography, ceramics, fiber art, collage/montage, glass sculpture, wood carving and metal sculpture.
Two-dimensional work must be framed, properly mounted when appropriate and wired for hanging. No sawtooth hangers will be accepted. No wet paintings or two-dimensional work larger than 4’x4.’ Three-dimensional artists must supply bases for sculptural works if necessary.
Advance registration before Wednesday, Oct. 9, is preferred. Entry forms are available upon request to artladycl@gmail.com
Adult division entry fees are $10 per item for non-Raintree members and $5 per item for members. The fee for students is $1 per item.
Adult division work should be brought to The Apple Shed from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, or 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10. Pick up is from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13. Raintree is not responsible for items taken without being checked out or those left after 4 p.m.
Student artwork must be nine inches by nine inches and mounted on 10” by 10” black construction paper with student name, school and grade typed in 18-point Times New Roman placed on bottom right side.
Student artwork, name list and fees should be mailed or delivered to Cindy Logan, 1905 Georgia Street, Louisiana, Mo., 63353, by Oct. 1. Questions may be e-mailed to artlady.cl@gmail.com
Adult division awards range from $25 to $500. Youth division prizes range from $2 to $50.
The judge will be Lacey Minor, an art and design professor at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, where she serves as director of the Boyle Family Gallery. She is an interdisciplinary artist with a focus in fibers and installation art.
A judge’s critique will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11. All are welcome to attend.
Purchase pledges are available for artists’ asking prices. Raintree will receive a 25 percent commission from work sold during the show. Selections for purchases may be made from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11.
Raintree is not responsible for loss or damage. The show will be enclosed and locked each night.
