
PIKE COUNTY, Mo.– A Pike County woman who would appear in more than 80 movies in 15 years made her film debut in June 1913.
Bowling Green native Virginia Kirtley would work with some of Hollywood’s first stars, including Charlie Chaplin and Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle. Her first picture was the comedy “Carbon Copy.”
Other films for which she was known included “The Girl Detective,” “The Goddess of Chance,” “The Grinning Skull,” “Love Knows No Law” and “The Flirt’s Mistake.” It was on the set of the movie “The Girls and Dad” that Kirtley met future husband Eddie Lyons.
In addition to acting, she wrote scripts and directed productions. Her last starring role came in the 1928 film “The Midnight Adventures. Kirtley died at age 67 in August 1956.
