The Louisiana Chamber of Commerce has a new way of encouraging people to shop locally.
It’s called “Chamber Bucks.” The announcement was made during the group’s annual banquet April 11 at the Gatherings at 601 performance and event venue.
Chamber President Tabitha Rardon got the idea after researching similar programs in Bowling Green, Troy, Hannibal and Quincy.
“A Chamber Buck is a versatile gift certificate issued by the Chamber of Commerce, intended to support local businesses and promote community engagement,” she said. “These certificates hold monetary value and can be used at various establishments that are members of the chamber.”
The Bucks will work like money in that people can use them to buy goods and services from chamber-member businesses, but not be redeemable for cash.
Bucks will be available in $10, $25 and $50 denominations and will be valid through Dec. 31 of this year. The full amount of each note must be spent at one location and no change will be offered if the total bill is less than that.
Rardon says the chamber will start recruiting participants immediately and hopes to have Bucks available by May 1. They’ll only be offered through the chamber office by calling 573-253-5201.
Businesses will not be charged to participate and can redeem Bucks by contacting the chamber.
Uses are many, Rardon noted. They can be offered individually, as gifts, for employee recognition, fund-raising and during special occasions.
“By using Chamber Bucks, individuals contribute directly to the economic growth and stability of their community, while also enjoying the convenience and choice they offer,” Rardon said.
