PITTSFIELD, IL. – For the past twenty some years they have carried out this simple tribute to all of the military who died on that December day. The bombing began at 7:48 am, Hawaii time. That is ll:48 Illinois time. Each year from the local Pittsfield High School, Mrs. Jodi Heavner, the teacher, brings her FFA Class uptown where five churches are located. Collectively they have 6 or 7 bells. At precisely 11:48 am they commence ringing church bells. The sound is remarkable. This is the only time our citizens hear all of them at once. The FFA students stopped the ringing at precisely twelve noon last year. After the ringing, Mrs. Heavner gathered her class into the First Baptist Church meeting room for a power point presentation on the events at Pearl Harbor, including a film of the actual bombing.. The day became a great educational history lesson for the FFA students. Indeed, they also became participants in making history by their respectful remembrance of December 7th, Pearl Harbor Day. They may be the only town in the United States that rings their church bells at ll:48 AM.
