CLARKSVILLE, Mo. – When an audience is told to expect the unexpected, the result is an entertainment extravaganza. Such is the prognosis for “The Variety Show,” a production by The Changelings Theatre Company of Raintree Arts Council. It’s at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, at The Apple Shed on Highway 79 in Clarksville. Tickets are $15 for adults and $13 for students and seniors. Director Mary Lang Fournier says the program will have many of the same elements as “The Carol Burnett Show” or “Saturday Night Live.” “Variety is the spice of entertainment,” she said. “It allows us to sample a plethora of genres, all in one hour.” The “cocktail of goodies” includes songs, sketch comedy, an original reading by a local author and even a puppet performance. Watch out, but Fournier also promises a little artificial intelligence-inspired audience participation. Any surprises? “Can’t tell…shhh,” Fournier whispered. At least there won’t be much seasonal stuff. “We leave the holiday fare to Santa,” she said. “There seems to be so much out there already.” Bowling Green songstress Donna Grote is a regular performer with The Changelings, and encourages people to attend. “One thing I love about theatre is the variety, and that’s what you’ll get,” Grote said. “We have great songs, skits and some hilarious fun. Variety shows give everyone a chance to showcase their talents. And Pike County has plenty of that.” In addition, the audience likely will notice upgrades that Raintree volunteers have made recently. The renovations continue, and Fournier said the theatre company is grateful. The Changelings has just launched a website at www.changelingstheatre.com. Raintree, which covers Pike and Lincoln counties, may be reached at www.raintreeartscouncil.org. If for no other reason, there’s at least an intrinsic reason to attend. “The appeal of tidbits of entertainment is in our culture,” Fournier said.
