LOUISIANA, Mo. — New exciting things are happening at Louisiana High School. They are trying to bring back a long lost tradition of having the student-run media class. Superintendent Dr. Tom Ward says, “I am excited. It’s a way that all of our kids can communicate what’s taking place within Louisiana R-2 District because we have a lot of good things going on here.” The school is bustling with noise about the new media class at LHS.
This class is offered for any junior or senior who is interested in all things media. When asked why they were interested in taking this class, Senior Jillian Booth said, “I have never been one to step out of my comfort zone and try something new, so I was put into this class and I ended up really liking it.” This class is a great way for many to try new things and dip their feet in the category of media. There were many factors that played into starting this class. “I know we have some students who are interested in pursuing a career in journalism, and I think our community misses having the school newspaper where they can get information regarding what’s going on in the district. I thought the combination of those two things would be resolved if we just brought back the class,” Mrs. Neff, teacher of the media class, said when asked about why she wanted to start the class.
The class offers a chance to interact with different types of media. When interviewing students about what form of media they were interested in, Senior Alex Dzierwa replied, “Definitely the sports media, I would like to cover all of the games such as interviewing people after the games because I know what’s going on.” The media class will have a “LHS Highlights” page every other week in the Louisiana Press Journal. This hasn’t been done for years and many are excited to see it brought back. They are also going to be recording and producing a Bulldog news broadcast weekly to spread news all about what is happening in the school. The school’s social media page will also be run by the students in this class. They are hoping to put a fresh spin on the school’s social media presence as a whole. Lastly, there are going to be students working with KJFM as Bulldog correspondents. Follow the school’s Facebook page to stay informed about what the media class has next! The hope for this whole class is to inform students, parents, and the community about what great things are happening at LHS.
