ELSBERRY, Mo.– The Elsberry Indians defeated the Duchesne Pioneers 10-2 in the Class 3 District 5 Championship on Wednesday night. The victory named the Indians district champions for the second year in a row.
It was a tight game for the first four innings as the Duchesne pitching staff was able to contain Elsberry’s offense to just two runs. Tied at two in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Indians’ offense came to life. Elsberry posted three runs, sucking the life out of their opponent.
Elsberry had a 1-2-3 inning defensively in the top of the sixth, closing the door on Duchesne. Offensively, the Indians weren’t done scoring after the fifth. In fact, they were just getting started. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Elsberry added five more runs, bringing the score to 10-2 heading to the final three outs of the game.
The Indians’ defense was solid in the seventh and Elsberry closed out the win with ease.
Elsberry will travel to Palmyra Tuesday for Class 3 Sectionals. The Indians defeated the Panthers earlier in the season 12-6.
