PIKE COUNTY, Mo. — Changes will allow more disadvantaged Missourians to sign up for utility assistance.

Governor Mike Parson announced that the state is expanding eligibility for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

A family of four making just over 51 thousand dollars a year will now be eligible. Previously, the qualifying level was a little over 35 thousand.

Agencies such as the North East Community Action Corporation welcome the change. NECAC says the COVID pandemic has kept more people at home in the last year. Consequently, their utility bills have risen.

Eligible households could receive up to 495 dollars, depending upon income, household size and type of heating source. Payments are made directly to utility companies.
