LOUISIANA, Mo. — The Louisiana Fire Department continued battling a blaze into the evening that broke out Wednesday afternoon at the old Ice House building at 314 Main Street in downtown Louisiana.
Louisiana received assistance from fire departments including Bowling Green, Buffalo Township, Clarksville, Curryville, Eolia, Frankford, Hannibal, Lincoln County. While flames had spread to an adjacent building, crews were able to contain the fire to the initial structure. The building was totally engulfed at one point and a large portion of an outer wall collapsed. Built in 1925, the 24,829 square foot brick building was constructed as a warehouse.
The Red Cross was unable to provide canteen supplies for firefighters due to COVID-19 protocols. The Louisiana Elks Lodge opened the Trimble House at 200 S. Main Street to provide shelter and supplies for crews. A representative from the Elks said donations are not needed at this time. Local businesses including Abel’s, County Market and Hardee’s provided water and food for firefighters.
Pike County Sheriff Stephen Korte is urging residents and motorists to avoid the area until further notice. No injuries have been reported at this time and fire fighters are expected to work through the night to make sure the fire is fully extinguished.
