PIKE COUNTY, Mo. – Following a meeting with the Pike County Health Department, it was agreed that schools should close through Friday, April 3.
Officials with the Bowling Green R-I, Louisiana R-II, Pike County (Clopton) R-III and BONCL R-X school districts have informed families and staff of the decision. Administrative teams within the districts continue to work on details such as meals and meeting educational goals.
The schools tentatively plan to resume operation on Monday, April 6, based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
All school activities, including athletic and extracurricular practices and competitions and facility usage will be canceled during the time schools are closed,” explained Bowling Green R-I Superintendent Dr. Matt Frederickson. “According to health officials, the idea of social distancing can significantly decrease the ability of a virus to spread and keep those who may be more vulnerable safe.”
Louisiana R-II Superintendent Dr. Todd Smith pointed out that area school officials have been communicating regularly as the schools navigate unprecedented territory.
Each superintendent noted the safety and well-being of students and staff is paramount.
“This has been a very difficult decision, knowing that schools are a place where multiple needs are met,” Frederickson stated.
All of the schools are working to make arrangements for at-home activities and processes and to put these in place for all students. All districts are also working on meal plans as well. Each superintendent further indicated that custodial and maintenance staff will be working on cleaning and preparing buildings for the return of students.
“Throughout closures, we continue to ask that families follow the CDC guidance of practicing social distancing, washing your hands, and practicing good respiratory hygiene,” Frederickson explained.
