LOUISIANA – Mitchel Lemons was the lucky winner of a drawing to push the button to demolish two trusses of the old Champ Clark Bridge.
The drawing was coordinated by the Louisiana Chamber of Commerce and Community Betterment. Lemons’ name was drawn on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Riverview Park.
Louisiana Community Betterment Chair Diana Huckstep, Chamber of Commerce Director Kristal Pitzer and Louisiana City Administrator Kelly Henderson were on hand to coordinate the event.
The drawing served as a fundraiser with chances sold to those interested in pushing the button to cue the blasts. Proceeds from the sale of tickets in Missouri will benefit the Louisiana Police, Fire and Ambulance.
Lemons is a student at Pittsfield High School. His aunt is a resident of Louisiana and purchased the ticket for her nephew. Lemons’ mother said that Mitchel could not be happier or more excited about the upcoming event.
“This type of thing is very interesting to Mitchel and right up his alley,” his mother remarked.
Tickets had been put into a large Bingo basket and stirred before Henderson drew the winning name.
Since high winds delayed the placement of explosive devices the past few days, the schedule on Friday had to be amended. The blasts were anticipated to take place at 9 a.m., which has been postponed to between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday.
The winner for the implosion of the Illinois side of the bridge was John Borrowman of Pittsfield. He purchased his tickets from the Pittsfield High School History Club.
