President Donald Trump calls a Northeast Missouri community leader a “model of the American spirit.
Clarksville Mayor Jo Anne Smiley received the President’s Volunteer Service Award on Friday (Sept. 21).
More than 65 people attended the ceremony at the Clarksville American Legion.
Trump sent Smiley a letter thanking her for extraordinary volunteer work and unselfish efforts to promote the Mississippi River community of 442 residents.
The retired music educator has been mayor for 15 years, and continues work on economic development and flood control measures.
At least 4,000 hours of volunteer service is needed to be considered for the award. Organizers said Smiley is one of the few people in the nation who has achieved a lifetime level for the honor.
While grateful, Smiley in typical fashion took the ceremony as a chance to thank Clarksville residents and others who have helped the town when needed.
