A Northeast Missouri community now has a permanent reminder of a man who helped end slavery. A bust of John Brooks Henderson was unveiled Saturday (June 30) as part of Louisiana's Bicentennial Celebration. During the Civil War, Henderson drafted and introduced the 13th Amendment outlawing slavery.Gregory Wolk of the Missouri Humanities Council called Henderson one of the forgotten greats of the state. The Humanities Council donated three thousand dollars for plaques that will adorn the statue holding the bust. Other costs were paid from donations. The bust will be dedicated at 1 p.m. July 4 in Louisiana's Henderson Riverview Park.
