On Veterans Day three years ago, a beautiful Black Gum tree was planted at Veterans Park in Louisiana by Pike County Chapter NSDAR. Unfortunately the tree did not survive the many changes in weather. On Veterans Day this year, the chapter will plant a Pin Oak in the same location. Both trees are native to Missouri..
All veterans are invited to attend the brief dedication ceremony at 9 am on Saturday, November 11 at Veterans Park. The chapter recognizes Americans who fought in all wars, veterans and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, those missing in action and all their families for the sacrifices they also gave.
The chapter has been an active participant in the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War and recognition of the Vietnam War veterans in the Louisiana area. On March 30 which is Vietnam Veterans Day, a special ceremony was held at the American Legion building and an excerpt from a speech by President Reagan was read. Quote: "Our liberties, our values, all for which America stands is safe today because brave men and women have been ready to face the fire at freedom's front. And we thank God for them".
