Authorities are investigating the apparent suicide of an inmate at the Pike County Jail in Bowling Green.
Thirty-four-year-old Steven Robert Bussell of Bowling Green was pronounced dead early Tuesday morning (May 24) after a jailer discovered the body in a cell. Authorities said the victim apparently hanged himself with strips from a bed sheet.
Sheriff Stephen Korte said Bussell had been dead for an hour or less when found and that foul play is not suspected. An autopsy is planned Wednesday in Columbia.
The Pike County Jail generally has two prisoners per cell, but Korte said Bussell was alone after another inmate bonded out Monday. The sheriff said jail protocol was followed before and after the death.
The investigation includes a review of videotape. While there are no cameras in the cells, video is recorded in each of three jail pods.
Court records show Bussell was awaiting a Pike County hearing on an alleged parole violation from a 2013 guilty plea in a felony resisting arrest case. He also faced a felony tampering with a motor vehicle charge from an incident that allegedly happened in August 2014 in Lincoln County.
