Some motorcycle riders in Missouri could go without helmets under a proposal that’s gotten initial approval.
The measure would allow motorcycle enthusiasts 21 and older to decide whether to wear head protection. They would also have to have insurance that pays at least $50,000 for injuries from a crash.
Right now, Missouri is one of 19 states that require a helmet for all riders. Twenty-four other states have limited age-related helmet laws, but Illinois and Iowa have no requirements.
The Missouri proposal is House Bill 1655 and is sponsored by Springfield Republican Eric Burlison. He says it’s a matter of personal freedom. Critics say it’s a safety issue.
Federal numbers show that fewer motorcyclists die in states which require helmets and that the costs to society are lower.
The proposal still needs another approval in the Missouri House before going to the Senate.
