In an apparent snub of the World Champion Kansas City Royals, a Missouri lawmaker has introduced legislation to make the St. Louis Cardinals the state’s official team.
House Bill 2831 is being offered by Democrat Representative Courtney Curtis. Not surprisingly, Curtis is from a St. Louis suburb. The House has given it a second reading.
The measure is one of 35 Curtis is sponsoring during the current legislative session. While a few could be classified as being on the lighter side, many of the proposals deal with serious issues.
Observers point out that Missouri already has a state animal, insect, fossil, mineral, dinosaur, song, grape, grass and dessert, among other things.
However, Curtis is a Democrat in a chamber controlled by Republicans, so he’s unlikely to see his efforts receive approval.
In case you were wondering, the state bird is not the cardinal but the bluebird – probably dressed in a royal color.
