A Northeast Missouri lawmaker’s plan to build new veterans homes in the state is moving forward.
The proposal to seek a constitutional amendment was passed overwhelmingly in the House and is on its way to the Senate. It comes from Republican State Representative Lindell Shumake of Hannibal and is co-sponsored by GOP Representative Jim Hansen of Frankford.
The plan would allow voters to consider the amendment. If passed, the state could issue up to 50 million dollars in bonds for new veterans facilities. Missouri has just under 14 hundred beds at seven veterans’ homes around the state. The closest to Northeast Missouri is in Mexico.
Shumake introduced a similar proposal last year. The Senate has not set a hearing date.
