A committee hearing is scheduled for Thursday (Feb. 11) on a proposed constitutional amendment to build new veterans homes in Missouri.
The proposal comes from State Representative Lindell Shumake of Hannibal. If voters approve the amendment, the state could issue up to 50 million dollars in bonds for new veterans facilities.
Missouri has 1,350 beds at seven veterans homes around the state. The closest to Northeast Missouri is in Mexico.
Shumake introduced a similar proposal last year. Thursday’s hearing before the House Fiscal Review Committee takes place at 9:15 a.m. in the South Gallery. The bill is HJR-54, and is co-sponsored by State Representative Jim Hansen of Frankford.
