The first step is being taken toward upgrading two major Louisiana transportation routes.
The public meeting on the Georgia Street and Highway 79 corridors is at 6 p.m. November 24th at the Elks Lodge downtown.
The two streets are among the most heavily-traveled in Louisiana. Highway 79 is maintained by the state, but Louisiana is responsible for Georgia Street, which is showing the results of wear and tear.
No decisions will be made at the meeting, but the city hopes to get an idea of how to proceed with the costly work. Mayor Bart Niedner says minimal repaving would cost 400 thousand dollars over four years – a price the city cannot afford. The cost could run as high as one million dollars.
Funding options could include a Community Improvement District or a transportation-related tax. Niedner said he hopes residents get involved in helping to make the critical infrastructure decision.
