The Pike County Missouri Sheriff’s Department is warning of a potential scam.

Investigators say a new mobile telephone application allows people to put in any number they want as the source of the call.

That means the number which shows up on caller ID as being from a law enforcement agency could actually be a con artist.

A person recently told the sheriff’s department about getting a call from someone who used a name similar to that of a department dispatcher. It turned out to be a fraud.

The sheriff’s department advises hanging up and reporting cases where callers try to get information or act suspiciously. The primary Pike County Sheriff’s Department number is 573-324-3202.
