This year’s flood is officially one of the worst in almost two centuries of Clarksville history.
The National Weather Service has ranked this summer’s inundation at number five in the Pike County community. Only the floods of 2013, 2008, 1973 and 1993 were more devastating.
The Mississippi River crested at 34-point-seven feet on July 9th, almost 10 feet above flood stage.
After Clarksville aldermen decided the city could no longer afford to pay for flood protection, residents and businesses were left to do it on their own. Volunteers from around the block and across the nation came to help.
Four of the top six deluges in Clarksville have happened in the last 13 years.
The Flood of 2014 ranked fourth-worst in Canton and sixth-worst in Quincy and Saverton. This year’s readings did not make the top 10 in Hannibal and Louisiana.
