After a winter storm pummeled Missouri today with snow, sleet and freezing rain, the Missouri Department of Transportation advises motorists to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

For much of the state, the storm moved in during the morning hours on Thursday, Feb. 21, and forecasts indicate it may continue through the overnight hours. MoDOT crews are out in full force plowing snow and treating Missouri's highways, but travel remains hazardous.

"This storm has affected almost the entire state, and most of our highways remain partly or mostly covered with snow or ice," said MoDOT Chief Engineer David Nichols. "That means it can be difficult and even dangerous to travel, and motorists should stay put if possible until the storm moves out and the roads can be cleared."

If you must travel, take your mobile phone and winter survival supplies. If you become stranded, stay with your vehicle and call 911. Be aware that emergency responders may have difficulty reaching you. Remember the following winter driving tips:

• Wear your seat belt.
• Slow down, and adjust your speed to the conditions.
• Give snow plows plenty of room.
• Keep your windshield and windows clear to help you see.
• Be alert and remember that road conditions can change very quickly.
• Allow extra travel time to get to your destination.
