St. Louis County officials are saying the investigation into the abduction of four year old Alisa Maier is over.
"We believe at this point we have plenty of evidence to believe that the person you previously reported as a person of interest, Paul Smith, is the suspect," St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch said during a press conference Thursday morning in Clayton. "There is no reason to believe at this point anyone else was involved."
Alisa was taken from the front yard of her home Monday evening as she played with her 6-year-old brother. She was found near a car wash in Fenton, about 10 miles north of St. Louis, late Tuesday after witnesses saw her walking away from a dark-colored, mid-sized sedan described as having "a very loud muffler" and missing wheel covers. Officials told reporters that witnesses described the man driving the car as "a white male, possibly a dark-skinned white male, (with) short dark hair, (in his) early 30s."
On Wednesday St. Louis County police said a man detectives considered a "person of interest" in the abduction was being approached by police in Hawk Point, when he shot himself. Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Al Nothum confirmed Paul S. Smith died at 10:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Charles.
Smith, 38 was a registered sex offender. In 1995 he pleaded guilty to sodomizing a 10 year old boy. Court records list his most recent address as 309 Hwy. D in Hawk Point where the confrontation took place.
In a press conference held today officials said Smith took Alisa to a Wal-Mart store in Troy where he purchased the girl new clothes. Investigators reviewed surveillance video from the store and found out Smith had paid for the clothing in cash and he purchased cigarettes which required him to give the cashier his birth date. Chief Fitch said that information helped them zero in on Smith.
Relatives of Maier, the four year old girl who was kidnapped outside her Louisiana home Monday evening and then found alive at an old town Fenton car wash Tuesday night, said when Alisa saw a picture of the person of interest she told them "he cut my hair."
Maier's six-year-old brother, Blake, witnessed the abduction and family members said when he saw a picture of the person of interest on television, "he got really scared and shook."
Meanwhile, family members said Alisa Maier is doing fine, with no signs of assault, sexual or otherwise. She's perfect in everyway according to her grandfather, except for a haircut to make her look like a boy.
