PITTSFIELD, IL — Shoppers at the Pittsfield Walmart may have noticed a fenced-off construction area in the parking lot as work continues on new water infrastructure for the store’s fire-protection system.
The project stems from an issue previously discussed during a Pittsfield City Council meeting. During that meeting, Alderperson Wilson raised concerns about water limitations at the Walmart property. Public Works Director Tom Reinhardt explained that the city’s current water pressure is not sufficient to meet the demands of Walmart’s fire suppression system.
Because large commercial buildings require adequate water pressure for sprinkler and emergency fire-protection systems, additional infrastructure is being installed at the site. The new water tower will provide the store with the water supply and pressure needed to meet those fire-safety requirements.
The fenced construction zone is located in the Walmart parking lot, where crews are working on the project. The store remains open and continues normal operations while construction is underway.
Customers are encouraged to use extra caution when driving or walking through the parking lot, watch for equipment and workers, and stay clear of the fenced construction area as the project moves forward.
