PITTSFIELD, Ill. — Pike County will mark the 250th celebration of America with a couple of events next week.

Folks are invited to the Independence Day kickoff on the courthouse square in Pittsfield on Friday, July 3. The event starts at 4 PM with the presentation of colors and proclamation for “America 250: Honoring Our Roots In Pike County, Illinois” which is the theme selected by the organizing committee. Pike County Board Chairperson Reta Hoskin will present the proclamation. Speakers will include Pittsfield Mayor Gary Mendenhall and State Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer.

A mural was recently added to the Pike County Art Guild building in Pittsfield. Friday’s activities include a dedication of the mural celebrating the nations 250th anniversary. Miss Southern Illinois Outstanding Teen Lauren Maher is planning a performance on the dulcimer at 5 PM, then S & S School of Dance will take the stage for performances at 5:30.

A beautiful patritotic quilt depicting the Founding Fathers with a 250th anniversary seal will be on display and for purchasing chances. A winner for the quilt raffle will be drawn at 6 PM. The raffle is a fundraiser for scholarships. Information about the scholarship fund will be provided at the event. The crowd can enjoy a Revolutionary War fashion show at about 6:30, then a great musical performance by Christie Mendenhall and friends.

The event will conclude with an explanation of the playing of “Taps” and a moving rendition of the solemn military tune. The planning committee for the event is hoping the square will be packed on Friday. The committee is chaired by Cheri Meyers. Find more information on the America 250 Facebook page.
