LOUISIANA, Mo. — Noting the decision was difficult, the Louisiana Chamber of Commerce announced today that the annual Fourth of July celebration at the Riverfront is cancelled this year.
Activities at the event have varied over the years, but the large fireworks display at dusk have always drawn large crowds. The Chamber noted in an announcement on social media that concerns over coronavirus forced the decision.
“It is with a heavy heart that the decision has been made to cancel the Louisiana 4th of July Celebration and fireworks display due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19,” the release stated.
The Chamber noted the decision is a disappointment for the community.
“It’s disappointing to us as well, as we are all members of our community and this affects us all. These decisions do not come easy for any of us but the safety and health of our community is first priority.”
The Chamber thanked the community for their support and understanding.
Also pointing to the continued threat of COVID-19, the Bowling Green VFW Post 5553 recently announced the cancellation of the annual Memorial Day parade that was slated for Monday, May 25.
That event traditionally started at the war memorial on the square in Bowling Green and continued to Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Local civic organizations would take part in a ceremony in addition to a keynote speaker.
